The burse and veil above and the banner on the right are part of a set of green paraments used on the ‘green’ Sundays of Epiphany and on Sundays of the Pentecost season. That season focuses on the Church’s living out Christ’s call to go into the world and depicts our creative responses to the power of God’s Spirit, as well as a world of tremendous creativity and growth that lies around us – hence the dominant use of the color green. The warp (threads that run vertically) in the banner move from the lighter greens of springtime through the Kelly greens of summer and on to the darker shades of pine trees in the fall. One of the lighter colors of green is a special type of spun yarn called “peace fleece.” During the Cold War cultural exchanges took place among farmers and artisans from both the former Soviet and the U.S. A result of those encounters was the decision to spin together wool from sheep in both places – hence the name “peace fleece.”
